Caffeine anyone? by
rms[_3_]
I was wondering if anyone knew of research of caffeine effects on running
performance. Maybe we could get a little group experiment together?
Look at Matt Fitzgerald's book _The New Rules of Marathon & HM
Nutrition_, in the pre-race section he discusses caffeine and acetaminaphen
& beet...

Brittle, Dried Out Plastic by
J.B. Wood
Hello, all, and my question deals with plastic/rubber materials as used
on athletic shoes and growing brittle with age even with non-use. I
recently unboxed a NOS pair of Etonic running shoes that I purchased
about 15 years ago. After I ran in them a couple of times the plastic
sides and heel...

Sprinters running a mile... by
Existential Angst[_2_]
Awl --
100 m sprinters -- purely anaerobic, right?
Do you think any of them include distance running at all, for
"crosstraining" purposes? Distance = 1 mile.
Does anyone know what people capable of a 10 sec 100m would run a mile in?
How bout distance runners running the 100m?

why I'm growing to hate colder weather! by
JBI
I've been exercising (running and now walking more with age) for over 20
years. I've always been perplexed why I seem to gain about 10-15 lbs
during colder weather than warmer, but this year I think I'm beginning
to figure it out. I eat pretty much the same way all season long but I
exercise...

Anyone done the Grand 2 Grand ultra? by
rms[_3_]
Looks pretty amazing but as a Scottish resident I'm more than a bit worried
about the temperature in September in Arizona/Utah.
No, summer temps are becoming a big problem while running here in New
Mexico. It is very difficult for me to stay hydrated in 90-100F and not
uncommon for me to...

running shoes too old? by
Bart Mathias
I was out walk-jogging (coddling a sore knee) a couple days ago in my
favorite running shoes (the original Nike Free 4.9) when I noticed that
something was flapping behind my left foot.
I was almost home and out of the rain, so I didn't stop to check it out
until I opened the first floor door,...

Teaching Running Form and Style: Same Cadence with different speeds by
ozziegontang
Well, 16 years later, I'm still teaching pretty much the same ball/heel form. You see the same from Danny Dreyer (ChiRunning) and Nicholas Romanov (POSE Method). Big boost came to ball/heel running from Born to Run and Caballo Blanco (RIP).
The halls of rec.running hold many memories. Now all...

lovely run this morning by
rms[_2_]
Hope you all have a nice run today!
Pushing 100F here during the day, but at dusk it's pleasant, and a
dousing by the occasional sprinkler very refreshing. Nothing makes me laugh
so much as dogs jumping back and forth across summer sprinklers!

Any good exercises to prevent injuries? by
Nordo
I've been jogging for about a month now and suddenly my knees are bothering
me. I bought some new, fancy shoes, but the slight, nagging knee pains
still persists while I'm running. Also, my new shoes seem to be aggrivating
my supposedly healed ankle injury from several months ago. Are there...

sudden return of plantar fasciitis by
Sam Seagate
After a couple of years, I have had a sudden onset of plantar fasciitis
in my right foot. The cause is unknown as I have been walking with the
same shoes regularly since December and have dropped quite a few pounds.
The only thing I can think of is that I changed my route this past
week to...

Looking for recommendations for a Heart Rate Monitor Watch by
mark cleary
Just buy a Garmin GPS and it comes with a heart monitor they are fine and
you know how far you ran. A long time runner should be able to tell there
running pace with in seconds per mile.

Avoid the Burn by
Steve Freides[_2_]
This article isn't about running per se, but it mentions running several
times, and includes some thought-provoking, IMHO, ideas about
alternatives to improving conditioning.
A few quotes from the article:
1. "Back in the 1980s, Soviet scientists and coaches, Prof. Yuri
Verkhoshansky among...
