I have heard a little about 5x5 programs but nothing really specific.
If you were to apply this protocol to your bench press workouts would
you only perform the prescribed rep scheme once per week. Also, if
applying once per week, would you employ any assistance type movements
on subsequent days?
iirc, you squat and row 3 days a week, alternate bench and overhead
press 1 or 2 times a week (alternating weeks on them), and deadlift 1
time a week. there's lot's of info on the web- google it up. i've
done both a 3x5 and 5x5. 5x5 linear progression worked great when i
was first starting- i did a couple cycles of that, then the next,
deloaded a crapload and started back up with 3x5.
like others have said though, just about everything works (for a
while), especially for beginners. the best thing i did was stop
trying to figure out exactly what to do, and just start with big
compound exercises. start with something light (drop the ego), add a
*little* each time, and come back and ask some questions when you need
something specific answered. :P
