Default No more than 2lb a week?

One way in which you can lose muscle is if you run out of liver or muscle
glycogen during your workout. To continue you will have to burn protein
instead of burning fat on a carbohydrate flame. If your sweat smells very
strongly of ammonia this is an indication you are burning protein. Ammonia
is a byproduct of protein metabolism.

Another factor you should consider is psychological in nature & has been
suggested by the others. If the inbalance in caloric intake & expenditure is
sufficiently great for you to lose more than 2 lbs per week, you will tend to
see the arrangement as temporary, to be given up when the desired weight is
lost. The formula for permanent weight loss is to sometimes eat somewhat less
if you need to lose weight, sometimes a little more if you need to maintain
your weight.
